Claverton College

International exposure

International standards and overseas study

Audiology and speech-language pathology follow internationally shared clinical protocols. The tests, devices and therapy approaches taught here are the ones used worldwide.

Overseas practice

Many college websites imply that a degree guarantees the right to practise abroad. It does not. Practising overseas requires that country's own credential evaluation and licensing. Counselling covers what each country requires.

Country by country

What each country actually requires

A BASLP degree with Council registration qualifies a graduate to practise in India. It is a recognised foundation for study abroad, and it is not, by itself, a licence to practise anywhere else. Here is the real position in the four countries students ask about most.

Requirements to practise in four countries
CountryWho decidesAudiologySpeech-language pathologyIn short
United StatesState licensing boards, to standards set by ASHAA clinical doctorate, the AuD, from an accredited programme. A master’s is no longer an entry route.A master’s degree, the Praxis examination, and a credential evaluation for an internationally educated applicant.A bachelor’s degree cannot be used to apply. Further study in the United States is the realistic route.
United KingdomHealth and Care Professions CouncilHearing aid dispenser is a protected title requiring HCPC registration. Overseas qualifications are assessed one by one.Speech and language therapist is a protected title. Overseas applicants are assessed against the UK standards of proficiency and must reach IELTS 8.0, with no element below 7.5.Registration is possible but never automatic, and the language bar is high.
AustraliaSpeech Pathology Australia and Audiology Australia, by professional certification rather than government registrationA qualification assessed as equivalent to an Australian clinical master’s in audiology. The Overseas Qualified Competency Assessment, which also requires more than a thousand hours of recent practice. The most open of the four, and still not open on a bachelor’s degree alone.
JapanMinistry of Health, Labour and WelfareThere is no separate audiologist licence. One national licence covers speech, hearing and swallowing. The Ministry must first accept the foreign qualification, then the national examination is sat in Japanese. In practice this needs near-native Japanese as well as the Ministry’s recognition.

Six pillars

What international exposure should actually mean

Verified items are described in full. Items awaiting confirmation are marked, not invented.

Global professional standards

Audiology and speech-language pathology follow internationally shared clinical protocols — audiometric standards, implant mapping practice and evidence-based therapy approaches. Students are taught against those standards, not a local subset of them.

Overseas higher education pathways

BASLP is a recognised route into postgraduate study in speech and hearing sciences abroad. Practising abroad needs each country’s own licence: in the United States a master’s degree and ASHA certification, in the United Kingdom HCPC registration, in Australia assessment by the professional bodies, in Japan the national licensing examination. Counselling covers what each route actually requires.

Studying abroad after BASLP

What it actually takes

The four steps below set out what is required.

Step 1
Credential evaluation

The BASLP degree and transcripts are assessed for equivalence by the destination country's evaluating body.

Step 2
Postgraduate study or bridging

Most countries expect a master's degree for independent practice in audiology or speech-language pathology.

Step 3
Language and clinical competency

English language testing and, in several countries, a clinical competency examination or supervised practice period.

Step 4
Registration or licensure

Registration with the national or state licensing body before independent practice is permitted.

Requirements differ substantially by country and change over time. Verify current rules with the relevant licensing authority before making plans.
